Display Hibernate Option on the Shut Down dialog

For some reason, Hibernate isn't available from the default Shut Down dialog. But you can enable it simply enough, by holding down the SHIFT key while the dialog is visible. Now you see it, now you don't!

Enable ClearType on the Welcome Screen!

As laptop users and other LCD owners are quickly realizing, Microsoft's ClearType technology in Windows XP really makes a big difference for readability. But the this feature is enabled on a per-user basis in Windows XP, so you can't see the effect on the Welcome screen; it only appears after you logon. But you can fix that. Fire up the Registry Editor and look for the following keys: (default user) HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ FontSmoothing (String Value)HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ FontSmoothingType (Hexadecimal DWORD Value) Make sure both of these values are set to 2 and you'll have ClearType enabled on the Welcome screen and on each new user by default.

Rip high-quality MP3s in Media Player for Windows XP (MPXP)

The relationship between Media Player for Windows XP (MPXP) and the MP3 audio format is widely misunderstood. Basically, MPXP is able to playback MP3 files out of the box, but encoding (or "ripping") CD audio into MP3 format will require an MP3 plug-in. During the Windows XP beta, Microsoft supplied a sample MP3 plug-in for testing purposes, but it was limited to 56 Kbps rips, which is pretty useless, leading some to report that Microsoft was purposefully hobbling MP3 to make its Windows Media Audio (WMA) format look better. This is not the case. To enable MP3 encoding in Windows XP, you'll need to to purchase one of three MP3 Creation Add-on packs for Windows XP. For more information, please visit the Microsoft Web site.

Remove the Shared Documents folders from My Computer

One of the most annoying things about the new Windows XP user interface is that Microsoft saw fit to provide links to all of the Shared Documents folders on your system, right at the top of the My Computer window. I can't imagine why this would be the default, even in a shared PC environment at home, but what's even more annoying is that you cannot change this behavior through the shell: Those icons are stuck there and you have to live with it. Until now, that is. Simply fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My Computer \ NameSpace \ DelegateFolders You'll see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If you delete this, all of the Shared Documents folders (which are normally under the group called "Other Files Stored on This Computer") will be gone. You do not need to reboot your system to see the change.

Automatically defrag drives with a new context menu item!

Create a new Registry import file named context_defrag.inf in Notepad (be sure to save with it with the Save as type set to All Files and not Text Documents) and place the following text inside: ; context_defrag.INF; Adds Defrag to the right click context menu in Windows XP[version]signature="$CHICAGO$"[DefaultInstall]AddReg=AddMe[AddMe]HKCR,"Drive\Shell\Defrag\command",,,"DEFRAG.EXE %1" Then, right-click and choose Install. This will add a context menu to XP that allows you to automatically defrag drives, using the command line version of the built-in defragmentation utility. To use it, navigate to a drive in My Computer, right-click, and choose Defrag. A command line window will appear, and that drive will be defragged. When it's complete, the window just disappears. UPDATE: To remove this functionality, Open regedit.exe and navigate to the following location: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\ Then delete the Defrag folder and close Regedit.

Don't just maximize your windows—go full screen

When you need a really big window, don't just maximize it: go full screen! To view a window full screen, hold down the Ctrl key and double-click the window's title bar—or when the window is active, press the F11 key at the top of your keyboard—to get the biggest window possible.

Make your own icons

It's shockingly easy to create your own icons in Windows XP. Let's do it: Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Paint. On the Image menu, click Attributes. Type 32 for both the Width and Height of the document, and make sure that Pixels is selected under Units. Click OK to create a new 32x32-pixel document: the size of an icon. Now add type, color, or do whatever you'd like to your image. I like to shrink photos (headshots work best) to 32x32 and simply paste them into my Paint document. When you're finished, open the File menu and click Save As. Use the dialog box to choose where you want to save your file, then give it a name followed by ".ico" (without the quotes), and click Save. (The extension ".ico" tells Windows that it's an icon file.) You just created an icon! Now you can change any shortcut or folder to your own icon—just browse to it on your hard drive.

Microsoft Windows XP is playing a cool music during installation. It is a pleasant little tune that you’ve probably never heard, unless you were present when Windows was being installed on your PC. After that it’s never played again, unless you know where to look for it.To hear what you’ve been missing, just follow these:Make you way to C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images and look for a file called "Title.wma" or possibly "Windows welcome music.wma".It is around 2.56Mb in size. Just double click the file and this will open Windows Media Player, or your defaul player and it will proceed to serenade you with a more than 5 minutes music. It's up to you to repeat it.CooL!!!

Menu Delays:

Another minor and easy tweak to remove any delay from menus sliding out. For this you will need to use regedit (open regedit by going to Start -> Run..., then typing 'regedit' and pressing enter). The key you need to change is located in HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. The actual key is called MenuShowDelay - all you have to do is change the value to 0. Remember, you will have to re-boot your computer for this tweak to take effect.

Find Serials Easy In Google ( Useful Trick )

Get in google and search for "program name" 94FBRIn "program name" write the name of the program that you want the serial for, without the ""There you go, your serial! How it works...Quite simple really. 94FBR is part of a Office 2000 Pro cd key that is widely distributed as it bypasses the activation requirements of Office 2K Pro. By searching for the product name and 94fbr, you guarantee two things.1) The pages that are returned are pages dealing specifically with the product you're wanting a serial for.2) Because 94FBR is part of a serial number, and only part of a serial number, you guarantee that any page being returned is a serial number list page.Check out these for example... "Microsoft Office 7" 94FBR "Star Wars" 94FBR "Nero Burning Rom 6" 94FBR

Protecting Yourself From Virus Damage

  1. Be Wary When You Receive Information From Others
A good thing to begin doing NOW is to check all files received from others, whether you receive them from a floppy diskette or from the internet. It is important to realize that most viruses are transferred without the knowledge of the person sending the information. The person sending an infected file could be you! To help prevent the spread of viruses, it is also a good idea to scan any files before transferring them to a floppy diskette or attaching them to an email message. Obtain a good virus scanning program for performing these tasks (described below). A good virus scanning program will not only detect and remove viruses, but will automate several of the procedures described above (such as scanning files before they are copied to a diskette).
  2. Obtain A Good Virus Scanner

UWM provides free virus software (McAfee), with free weekly updates of the virus definitions. the software can be downloaded by anyone with an alpha ID. Use the following link: http://www.uwm.edu/IMT/purchase/virusprotect.html You need a UWM connection to download this from home. OR you can also go to the Second floor SBA lab or Bolton Lab 225 and get the Campus Resource CD which has the virus scan protection software on it.

There is also a free online virus scan that works while you are hooked up to the web. It is called house call available at: http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Spybot -- Free spyware destroyer Spy Sweeper -- Free spyware destroyer

  3. Backup
Regular backups are an important measure against preventing loss from computer viruses. This is true even if you are backing up the virus that eventually caused the damage. Why would this be so? Well, lets say you get a computer virus that destroys all of your data on your hard drive. Fortunately, you've got a backup that you made yesterday. Although you know the virus is in the backup, you can safely restore all of your data, obtain one of the virus scanners listed above, and remove the virus before continuing with your work.

How Does A Virus Work?

    Executable Virus
As the name suggests, this virus works by infecting executable files. Executables generally included files with extensions of .vbs, .exe, .com, .sys, .dll, .bat, .reg, and others. DO NOT OPEN ANY OF THESE FILES UNLESS YOU KNOW THE PERSON AND HAVE VIRUS SCANNED THE FILE! Another area that the executable virus looks to infect is the boot sector of either a hard disk or a floppy disk.

In order for an executable virus to do any damage, it must first be loaded into the computer's memory. It accomplishes this as follows:

    1. Attaches itself to an executable file, thereby infecting it.
    2. Sits on that executable file, going unnoticed, while waiting for you to execute that file.
    3. Once the infected file is executed, the virus is executed itself. That is, the virus is loaded into the computer's memory.
    4. Once in memory, the virus program can operate, carrying out the instructions of the progammer.
An executable virus may attach to the boot sector of a hard disk or floppy disk. This boot sector virus is much more serious than other viruses since it loads automatically into memory and can begin working each time you start your computer.

    Macro Virus
A macro virus is a virus that needs another computer program before it can operate. Generally, you will only find Macro viruses infecting Microsoft Word and Excel. This is because these programs use a Visual Basic module for running their macros.

When the virus attacks the Word or Excel document, it sits in the document and waits until you open the document with Word or Excel. Once you open the document, the macro runs, and the virus is now loaded into the computer's memory and can begin doing it's work.

Macro viruses, such as the Word Macro Virus, often infect more than the document. Word has a set of templates, (.dot files), that it uses. The most common file is normal.dot. A Word Macro Virus will often not only infect the document you are working on, but will try to infect Word's Normal template as well. This insures two things:

    • Any document created within that template will be infected.
    • Any infected documents that are opened on other (non-infected) computers will infect those computers as well.

If your computer ever asks you to save change to the Normal.dot template say No and stop using that file!!!

Hacking Computers

Introduction

Computer hacking is what everybody fears. It is when some malicious hacker breaks into an innocent (or not so innocent) person's computer. This has happened once to me and once to a friend and I can describe to you both instances. However, hacking computers is difficult. Those who hack are computer professionals having fun - its a sick world.

What are the different types of hacking?

There are two. Hacking into a computer by trying to access its files and trying to access or damage it through a virus. The first is used mainly to obtain specific data while the latter out of a pathetic spite. Both can be equally damaging and it is important to be cautious when browsing the internet.

How do they target you?

Wherever you go on the internet you leave a trail behind you. The first is with your ISP (Internet Service Provider). They can log all the actions you perform on the internet because they carry out all your online actions. You also have and I.P address. This is supplied by your ISP and any website you visit can detect it. It is also attached to any information you send over the internet including e-mails and in chatrooms.

How can you prevent viruses and hackers?

Norton Antivirus is a very popular but over-rated program used to stop viruses. A much better solution would be to use Bitdefender. An additional way is to use a firewall. This also helps prevent hackers and so is extra useful. Windows XP has one built in but once again Bitdefender is a good option if you use an older operating system or want a more sophisticated one.

Website Hacking Made Easy

There are two types of website hacking:

  1. Hacking to break into password protected sections of the website. (Often Illegal)
  2. Hacking so that you can modify or deform a website. NOTE: Criminal Offence

Website Hacking is not uncommon. It is simply trying to break into a site unauthorised. Webmasters can use encryption to prevent this. However, as most website programmers do not use encryption their websites are easy targets. Methods of protection include javascript, asp, php and cgi, but most other server-side languages can also be used. I will show you how to hack websites which use javascript protection.

Javascript protection has never been secure, if you are looking at the source to find the password to client-side protection, you will probably not have any problem finding the password unless it is encrypted. Follow the steps below so that you can understand the basics of hacking websites.

Recently 2 dummy bank sites were launched, the first totally insecure and the second was secured with a firewall. 8 weeks later, both sites were checked. The first without a firewall, averaged a hacking attempt every four minutes, the second, with a firewall, averaged an attack every hour. This just goes to prove how malicious some hackers are.

On this website you will find nothing of such a malicious nature. Building positive white hat hacking skills is a good thing and we encourage it, as do we helping you protect your own site, but bad hat hackers should find a better hobby.

Orkut Crush List Explanation

Have you ever wondered how the Orkut "Add to my crush-list" option works? Most of us are scared to add someone to our crush-list because of the fear that he/she will get a notification from Orkut that you have added him/her on your crush-list. YES, they will get such a notification. But that is only if they too add you on their crush list. In fact, you both will get a message from Orkut if you both have added each other on your respective crush lists. This is a fantastic piece of innovation from Orkut wherein one-side crushes will not be notified and if mutual crush exists, then both sides will come to know of it. Spreading this information is important. It will help the cause of many people and who knows, you may be the lucky one too!!! So start adding people to your crush-lists now and spreading this vital information!!!

Anonymizing the Net: The Onion Router

Security and privacy is a big issue on the internet. Slowly and streadily all the casual internet users are warming up to things like spyware and browser hijacking, over existing threats such as viruses, which is a good thing. Any self respecting surfer shouldn't use Internet Explorer, at least not the current version, but only using Firefox alongwith anti-spyware solutions, such as Ad-Aware or SpywareBlaster, is only a part of the battle won. Even if you get rid of your cookies every five minutes, you're still leaving behind a trail of your browsing habits, not on your own PC, but on the servers that host the sites you're visiting, and all the nodes in between. Let me back track a little. The Internet The Internet is a network of computers connected to each other, but not directly to each other. A computer, called a node, in Mumbai isn't directly connected to a node in New Delhi, but they are still able to access each other because the connection from Mumbai "hops" from router to router all the way till it reaches the other one at Delhi. All the routers in the middle can store logs of your visits by your IP addresses. A connection typically uses the same route for an entire session, increasing the chances of someone sniffing packets and tapping into your internet interests. The following picture demonstrates typical internet flow. The amber node is the source that initiates the connection (i.e. typing in a website url, etc.) and the green one is the destination (i.e. the node that hosts the website you're trying to visit). The red line indicates a typically unencrypted line of communication between normal nodes on the internet. When a connection is initiated with the Tor network, a list of available routers is procured and one of them is chosen to carry the connection forward. The chosen router then looks for another random router in the vicinity and forwards the data to it. This continues till the connection reaches the closest router, from where it breaks out of the Tor network into the regular internet to access the destination website. Since the connection can come from any of the various Tor routers without any information of the actual source, the destination has random source IP addresses in the logs, completely anonymizing your browsing session. .onion Websites Tor is not only a network of routers and proxy servers. It is also possible to host "hidden" websites within the Tor network itself, which get a pseudonymous TLD ".onion". They are virtual domains that don't actually exist in the public internet and also cannot be accessed by computers that are not running the Tor software. Sites get random names using public keys, such as 6sxoyfb3h2nvok2d.onion, making them even more difficult to identify. How to use Tor There are two components that form the Tor network: the Tor server/router and the Tor client. Routers are generally dedicated machines that are kept for forwarding and bouncing traffic around the network. Clients are installed by peers wanting to anonymize their browsing session. A typical end user simply downloads and installs the Tor client and configures his applications (browser, instant messenger, etc.) to access the internet via the Tor client, which runs as a SOCKS proxy on the user's computer.

XSS(Cross Site Scripting) Attack....

Cross-site scripting (XSS) occurs when an attacker introduces malicious scripts 2 a dynamic form that allows the attacker 2 capture the private session information. An XSS attack leads to undesirable effects. For example, the attacker gains the ability to capture the session information, peer into private user details such as ID, passwords, credit card information, home address and telephone number, social security/tax IDs, and so on. If the targeted Web site doesn't check for this type of malicious code, misuse of the user is probable. To reduce the risk of having the script identified as malicious, the attacker might encode it with a different encoding method, such as HEX. With this alteration, the Web site displays the malicious content on the page as if the displayed information is the valid content from the site. If the Web application doesn't validate the input, all the attacker has to do is to coax the user to select the malicious hyperlink, after which the Web application collects confidential data from the user. This enables the attacker to capture the user's session and steal the user's credentials, redirect to a page on another Web site, and then insert code that can poison cookies, expose SSL connections, access restricted or private sites, or even trigger a number of such attacks. There are five ways to prevent these XSS(Cross Site Scripting) Attackes. They are:- 1)Disable scripting when it is not required. 2)Do not trust links to other sites on e-mail or message boards. They may contain malicious code with damaging potential. 3)Do not follow links from sites that lead to security-sensitive pages involving personal or business information unless you specifically trust them. 4)Access any site involving sensitive information directly through its address and no not through any third-party sites. 5)Get a list of attacks and the sites and boards they happened on and be careful if you need to visit one of them.
